Hi there, and welcome to The Dealers Diary. This week it is not Malcolm writing. It is Nick, the other founder, and he has the keys.

If you missed past emails, I recommend checking out the Dealers page where you can see the past emails we sent.

In today's entry: Nick hijacks the Diary | his biggest mystery hint yet | a new charity strain lands this week

The Dealers Desk

Hey Dealers,

I am deeply saddened to inform you that Malcolm was kidnapped during his last week in Central America.

If you've read this far, you know I'm kidding. I just needed something to grab your attention, so please don't leave now.

This week the Diary is brought to you by me, Nick, the other founder and owner (they call me the product wizard around here). I'm hoping you've seen my story on the back of the package, and yes, that's my real number. Hit me up.

Me, in the lab, holding the thing $1,000 is still riding on.

Malcolm and I have been friends for 10 years now, and we started Halara together along with Travis. Quick tip while I have you: distillate is thick, and infusing edibles with it risks one big chunk that never fully mixes in, so you bite into a brownie with a 500mg chunk hiding inside. This may or may not have happened when I made brownies a long time ago, and Malcolm ate one.

Onwards and upwards,

-Nick

What We're Seeing

  • 250 years, and this is still the closest we've gotten: I was reflecting over the 4th on the fact that America just turned 250 and cannabis is still federally illegal. The DEA's hearing to reclassify cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III began June 29th, and I'm not going to pretend a schedule change fixes everything (it doesn't touch the 280E tax math for a rec brand like us). But 250 years of a flat no, and a federal agency is finally in a room arguing about a maybe. That's worth paying attention to, even with the hearing stacked the way it's stacked (more on that in Quick Hits below). Much more to come as this plays out.

Strain Spotlight

Cannalope Chronic is a hybrid distillate cartridge and AIO, 90% THC. Myrcene, Pinene, and Ocimene do the work here: pure cantaloupe sweetness on the inhale, like biting into a perfectly ripe melon on a hot day, with a crisp, almost minty edge from the Ocimene and Pinene that keeps the whole thing feeling clean instead of heavy. Euphoric, uplifted, energetic, in that order. This is my wake-and-bake strain. Mood lift, no jitters, no crash.

@thegroveculture's unboxing. Not sponsored, just a shoutout we didn't ask for.

If a bright, melony sativa-leaning high is your speed, this is the one to ask your shop for by name. Find a shop carrying it.

Dealers Choice

Speaking of Cannalope Chronic, this came into my phone the same week I was writing this issue. Natalie from Madera, texting the number on the back of the bag, unprompted: "Good afternoon Nick. This is Natalie from Madera. I wanted to express my appreciation for the wonderful strain Cannaloupe Chronic. I tried it yesterday. It has become a favorite. Right up there with my beloved Pineapple Express. Both are so smooth and delicious. Very calming and uplifting. Perfect addition to my bbq. I smoked before everyone got here and just sat back and watched everyone eat and laugh. No stress of hosting or anything. Pure entertainment and bliss."

This is exactly why the number is on the bag.

Coming Soon

If you skipped the text above, you don't know I already told you: our newest product is headed to distro this week. It's our 4th charity release of the year, this time with the Animal Humane Society. You'll remember Mutt Melon and Mochi Paws. Now it's Strawberry Stray, and the flavor is incredible and smooth, as it should be. Instagram and our website will do the rest of the talking on this one.

Strawberry Stray, our 4th charity release, benefiting the Animal Humane Society.

We're also refilling the solventless batches (sold out fast enough that we ran dry, new run ships this week and goes out the week after), and adding two new resin strains to the All-in-One line, taking us from 3 to 5. Worth remembering while I'm here: we're one of the only brands running a quartz glass atomizer in the vape, the anti-clog hardware that's the reason it tastes like a fresh dab all the way to the last pull.

One more thing, for my dispensary managers and buyers only: I'm sending a recurring email called Nick's Drops a few times a month highlighting new products, restocks, and my inside scoops on what's actually selling. If you're not a dispensary buyer or manager, that one's not for you. Go get hired at a dispensary and let us know.

Quick Hits

  • Mystery strain, still unclaimed, hint #9 (this may be my biggest one yet): Nobody's gotten it completely right, though some of you are halfway there. Here's the hint: one of the strains in the mix was very popular in 2009. Not that exact strain, a version of it, so add one more flavor word to the front of that popular 2009 strain and you're close. $1,000 and the QR code on the bag is still live. Enter here.

  • The DEA hearing on rescheduling began June 29, and only cannabis opponents were invited to testify. Read the official DEA release, then Cannabis Business Times on the DEA coming out swinging, and if you want the more hopeful read, Marijuana Moment's op-ed makes the case that stacking the hearing this way is actually a tell.

My Munchies

This has been a staple in my house for a few years and it should be in your rotation too, baked Japanese or purple sweet potatoes with a Kenyan black tea. These potatoes are a staple in Blue Zone communities, so happy AND long life to you. Full recipe is here:

Do me a favor and reply to this email, then go tell Malcolm my taste in music is far superior to his.

I have yet to get tired of this one. Every time it comes up on my random playlist I never skip it.

If you don't like this song, I don't know what to do with you.

And to close it out.

Bonus Ending

Alright, if you've made it this far I'm proud of you. If you made it this far because you skipped everything above, I'm still proud of you, because that's probably something I'd have done myself.

Since you made it this far, here's a picture of Malcolm from almost 10 years ago. We were in Denver checking out extraction equipment, staying at a friend's place, crammed into one room. Malcolm had the blow-up mattress. After a night of dabs, Travis (the third founder) tipped the hot blowtorch over onto the air mattress. We taped it up, but I could hear a slow hiss out of that mattress all night, then Malcolm waking up every so often to add more air.

Ten years ago, Denver, the night of the air mattress.
